Event in London

Released by Friends of Kebyar

March 20, 2008

for FoK Newsletter, e-mail list, and website

approved by Tate Modern

Bruce Goff

Tate Modern, Starr Auditorium

London 21st & 22nd June 2008

After thirty years of neglect, Bruce Goff’s fresh creativity will again light up London!

This weekend of events celebrating the work of visionary architect Bruce Goff are to include presentations and discussion by key figures led by Charles Jencks, Peter Cook, Sid Robinson, John Sergeant, and Dennis Sharp, as well as the world premiere of a new film about Goff by acclaimed artist Stephen Prina, all on Saturday. The British premiere of 'Goff in the Desert' by Heinz Emigholz will feature on Sunday, as well as Emigholz’s road film of the making of that film across America. Emigholz will attend as well.

On Sunday, as guests of Tate, Friends of Kebyar will meet with architects and artists from Britain and the Continent. In those sessions Herb Greene will present a new paper on Goff, philosophy, and sources of creativity. Doug Harris will present his memoirs of working and living with Goff. We plan for these discussions to continue on Monday evening, the 23rd, at the Architectural Association.

Our Goff events are included in the London Festival of Architecture, now established as a leading world celebration.

A detailed and referenced program, with further participants listed, will follow.

FOK Subscribers attending are asked to contribute  $30 towards meeting FOK’s expenses. This should be sent to Bob Bowlby. * Any surplus may go towards a group lunch at Tate Modern. Refreshments would be extra. Ticket s for the main event on Saturday are probably to be £7 (£5 concessions) and for the films on Sunday £5(£4). There are a number of complimentary tickets to be available to FOK members. Nelson Brackin will allocate these to Subscribers once contributions are   received. Otherwise tickets are to be booked on the Tate website.

We recommend the Travelodge Hotel Southwark, on Union Street SE1, for price. It is in a backstreet a couple of blocks from Tate and the wonderful South Bank river walk. At the moment, for June, weekend (Friday/Saturday/Sunday) prices seem £49 a double, without breakfast.  Weekdays (Mon-Thur) are £95. All prices change and you may be able to get special rates through your own memberships.  You might stay there your whole trip, or perhaps move up during the week to Travelodge Drury Lane, in Covent Garden WC2. That is near the British Museum, the AA, main theatres and shops being walking distance. That location is unbeatable. Weekdays @£105 is good value in this expensive city.

FRIENDS OF KEBYAR

Friends of Kebyar is a  non-profit corporation registered in Georgia and an international network of people interested in original and innovative architecture that is not “mainstream” - architecture that defies the tyranny of styles. We advocate creative and unusual solutions to the challenges facing today’s architects.

Kebyar is a Balinese word literally meaning the process of flowering. It also designates a style in Balinese music and art connoting strength and
vigor. Internationally famed architect Bruce Goff chose Kebyar as the name for a school of creative arts and architecture he was planning at the time of his death.

The organization’s purposes are to advance creative organic architecture, to bring attention to the works of original artists, and to nurture the spiritual endowment left by the architects that have preceded us who worked so hard to free their art from the indolent idioms of fashion and imbue it with new meaning, integrity, and respect for the natural environment. To that end, Friends of Kebyar publishes a journal documenting the works of many selected architects, sponsors a series of “celebration-gatherings” and symposiums, and now publishes a newsletter which provides a medium for a network colloquy. This Web Site also has a Directory of Fellow Subscribers with hot links to individual e-mail and Web Site URL. It is a way to see the work of other subscribers and build community. Inclusion in the Web Site Fellows Directory is now a benefit of Kebyar subscription.

We also send out e-mail news called FoK e News to all subscribers that have an e-mail address. This is sent out whenever there is something of interest to Friends of Kebyar subscribers and can not wait for the printed news letter.
